Portrait painting is a genre in painting
September 22 2008, 11:44 AM
Portrait painting is a genre in painting, where the intent is to depict the visual appearance of the subject, most often a person. A well executed portrait is expected to show the inner essence of the subject (from the artist's point of view, of course) not just a physical likeness.
The term 'portrait painting' can also describe a painted portrait. portrait painters create their portraits by commission or are inspired by admiration or affection for the subject. If an artist portrayes him- or herself, the result is called a self-portrait.
Portraits can depict the subject 'full body', 'half length' or 'head and shoulders'. Beside human beings, animals, pet Portraits ,dog portraits and even inanimate objects can be chosen as the subject for a portrait.

Pop art is a visual art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in parallel in the late 1950s in the United States. The coinage of the term Pop Art is often credited to British art critic/curator, Lawrence Alloway in an essay titled The Arts and the Mass Media, although the term he uses is "popular mass culture" Nevertheless, Alloway was one of the leading critics to defend mass culture and Pop Art as a legitimate art form. Pop art is one of the major art movements of the twentieth century. Characterized by themes and techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising and comic books, pop art is widely interpreted as either a reaction to the then-dominant ideas of abstract expressionism or an expansion upon them. Pop art, like warhol prints ,pop music, aimed to employ images of popular as opposed to elitist culture in art like having own photos on canvas or , emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture. It has also been defined by the artists use of mechanical means of reproduction or rendering techniques that down play the expressive hand of the artist. Pop art at times targeted a broad audience, and often claimed to do so.
Much of pop art is considered very academic, as the unconventional organizational practices used often make it difficult for some to comprehend. Pop art and minimalism are considered to be the last modern art movements and thus the precursors to postmodern art, or some of the earliest examples of postmodern art themselves.

Photo on canvas
May 14 2008, 5:47 AM
HI,
I have heard that there are many different ways to get photos on canvas. Some of the better versions are done in pop art style. I am thinking of getting a photo on canvas for my home and have seen photo on canvas prints that have a good Lichtenstein flavour.
I want the picture to be their pet dog and wondered if anybody thought that a Lichtenstein print of a German Shepherd was too much? I don't think so but then that's just me.
Thanks
